ABOUT BESSY - an ultimate space and time microscope

The Berliner Elektronenspeicherring-Gesellschaft für Synchrotronstrahlung (BESSY) operates the only German 3rd generation synchrotron radiation facility. The storage ring BESSY II provides ultrabright photon beams from the long wavelength Terahertz region to hard X-rays with complete control of the polarization of the radiation and energy range. 46 beamlines offer a multi-faceted mixture of experimental opportunities at undulator, wiggler and dipole sources with excellent energy resolutions. The combination of brightness and time resolution makes BESSY the ultimate microscope for space and time, since both femtosecond time and picometer spatial resolutions are available.

BESSYs profile is mainly science driven by its large user community. Of particular significance are the activities of the institutional users Hahn-Meitner-Institut, Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung, and cooperating research groups. Owing to the radiometry lab of the Physikalisch-Technische-Bundesanstalt, BESSY is the European calibration standard for electromagnetic radiation.

Our Mission

Providing synchrotron radiation of highest brilliance and quality for international researchers and industry.

The accomplishment is based on the BESSY research and development program, incorporating
  • continuous development of the BESSY II source and development of new radiation sources such as Free Electron Lasers
  • design and construction of undulators and beamlines enabling state-of-the-art technology
  • generation of novel concepts of applying synchrotron light particularly in the fields of imaging techniques, ultrafast processes, and Microengineering
  • and training of highly qualified technical and scientific staff.

Being a member of the international scientific community BESSY is obliged to the rules of good scientific practise.

BESSY is an equal opportunity employer. Child care is available at the Campus Adlershof.
